RICHMOND, VIRGINIA
Rich in history, Richmond, the capital city of Virginia, was officially chartered as a town in 1742. Overlooking the falls of the James River, Richmond played a major role in the development of the colony of Virginia, and the entire country.
Named the Capital of the Confederacy at the start of the civil war for its strategic location and the home of the Tredegar Iron Works, Richmond fell to the Union troops of General Grant in 1865.
Literally hundreds, if not thousands of historic roadside markers today chart the historic journey of the city and the surrounding counties. Today, Richmond is a thriving modern city with a population of approximately 1.2 million.
